Allergens
Allergens in the indoor environment can come from house dust mites, pets, mould and pollen, among other things. Allergens are substances that can cause allergic reactions. An allergic reaction occurs when the body's immune system has a hypersensitive response to certain substances (allergens).
Pet allergy
The hair of a particular animal is often mistakenly given as the cause of a pet allergy. In a pet allergy, symptoms are caused by a reaction to animal dander (epithelium) and feathers. Animal saliva and urine also contain allergens. Inhaling these allergens causes pet allergy symptoms. An allergy to cats and dogs is the most common. Cat allergens are the strongest and therefore usually cause symptoms. Because cat allergens are microscopic, they can easily penetrate deep into the respiratory tract. Other pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as birds such as the canary, parakeet, parrot and pigeon, can also cause an allergic reaction.
Pet allergy complaints (symptoms)
Symptoms occur mainly in the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes and lungs. They manifest as, for example: sneezing fits, fatigue, poor sleep, stuffy nose, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, headache, eczema, asthma symptoms (difficulty breathing, wheezing or coughing), chest tightness after changing/emptying the hoover bag.
